Baccarat Basics for Beginners

Often thought of as a game for high rollers, online baccarat is, in reality, a game that can be played by anyone, regardless of how much money they are looking to bet. Baccarat is highly popular throughout the world, specifically in the United Kingdom and Australian region. Now available via online casinos, the game is more popular than it has ever been.

Interestingly, baccarat is similar to blackjack in some ways, but utilises a much more hands off approach for the player, and offers the unique aspect that onlookers may bet on a game. At its core, baccarat is a very social game, and is often the focus of much banter at real world and online casinos. Let’s take a look at the game of baccarat, and learn more about how it is played.

Chasing The Number 9

In blackjack players are chasing the number 21, but in the game of baccarat it is 9. Much like blackjack, the player and dealer are both dealt a hand, but in baccarat it is the hand closer to 9 that is the winner. Note that in baccarat the total cycles round upon cards being dealt, as opposed to the hand going bust of the total exceeds 9. So, for example, if a hand was totalling 16, the counted number would be 6. It is also very important to note that face cards, and 10, are counted as 0 in the game of baccarat.

It was already mentioned that baccarat is a hands off game, and this is because the player actually has no say as to how his or her hand will play out. There are set rules in place for the dealer, who will follow them as is required. If a third card is needed for the player’s hand, the dealer will put it down automatically. The player in baccarat, in fact, has no say at all as to how the game will progress. It is for this reason that onlookers are allowed to place bets on games they are not playing.

Placing Bets

But how does one make money on baccarat? There are three possible bets to make in baccarat, be you the player, or an onlooker. The options are; betting on dealer, betting on bank, or betting on a tie. These are the only three betting options, which makes the game enticing to those who prefer to avoid the more complicated betting options and rules of games like roulette.

Placing a bet on the bank is the best chance of winning, since the bank house a house edge marginally higher than that of the player. The drawback is, however, that less is paid out if the bet is a success. This is because the casino takes a small percentage of all bets placed on the bank, including those that win.

The second option is to bet on the player hand. This bet pays out more than betting on the bank, but has a slightly less chance of being a success. The casino takes nothing for bets placed on the player that is a success. Most choose to bet on the bank, but a bet on the player is also a very viable option.

Betting on a tie is the least chosen bet in the game of baccarat. Ties are rare in the game, and only happen on occasion. Hence, betting on a tie is a risky move, and most will avoid the bet for obvious reasons. If a bet on tie is successful, however, the payout is a great deal more than betting on player, or banker.

Strategies And Advanced Play

Because of the nature of the game, there are few advanced strategies that may really be applied. This does not mean, however, that a bettor cannot take a smart, well thought out approach to the game. How much to bet, and when to place bets can all have an enormous difference on how much can be won, on a consistent basis. Placing down spontaneous bets may be fun, but is not the smartest approach.

Do a search for baccarat betting guides, and you will likely find dozens to choose from. Adopt a betting guide and put it into practice. Note, though, that there are many different approaches to the game, but that none are perfect. Some may be more aggressive, and others more passive, but none will make the bettor a perfect player. See which guide works for you, and stick with it.

Practice For Free

If you are cautious, there are many online casinos that offer baccarat for free. In this case the game can be played for virtual currency, which behaves in much the same way as real currency, but zeroes upon the game being exited. Use such free versions of the game to become familiar with the rules and when you play for real money you’ll know exactly what you are doing!
