Augmented reality mobile game Pokémon Go is absolutely everywhere, and chances are that, if you don’t play it yourself, you know several people who do. Nothing in the history of mobile gaming has captured the attention of so many players around the world, which begs the question, is the game a benchmark or a watershed?
Released a few short months ago, the game, developed by Niantic in partnership with Nintendo and the Pokémon Company, amassed more users who are active on a daily basis than social media platform Twitter.
While Pokémon Go may be massive news, it was by no means the first AR or even mobile game that takes its players out into the real world.
The game that paved the way was Mogi, released in Japan in 2003. Mogi was followed quickly by 2004’s I Love Bees, which saw players around the world working to solve puzzles that involved GPS coordinates.
The game that set the benchmark, however, was Niantic’s 2012 release, Ingress. Downloaded more than seven million times, the sci-fi themed game has players join a battle between two opposing forces.
Players need to traverse the real world to find and conquer portals, in much the same way as Pokémon Go players search for PokeGyms and PokeStops. The biggest difference between the two games, which share many similarities, is that Pokémon Go taps into a brand that is entrenched in popular culture.
More Watershed Than Benchmark
Pokémon Go is not a perfect AR mobile game. Its graphics are fairly basic, and there have been functionality issues and glitches, although the developers are working constantly on fixes and new features.
While the game doesn’t quite set a new benchmark, it certainly does make for a watershed moment. Mobile casino software developers, who have been following the development of VR gaming, have no doubt paid attention to the success of the AR game.
What this means is that you can expect casino-style AR games in the near future, but whether you’ll have to hunt for slots or table games or not remains to be seen.
In the meantime, sign up at River Belle mobile casino, and enjoy the thrills of playing slots and table games at home or on the go. You won’t see the games against a real world background, but you could find yourself winning real money jackpots now.
