Justin Bieber made ground meat of millions of teenage hearts when he took to Instagram to confirm he popped the question to Hailey Baldwin – and the Internet responded accordingly. The superstar dated his model girlfriend for a month before proposing to her at dinner in a Bahamas restaurant in July, although the pair were previously linked romantically in 2016.
Although some fans could not contain their excitement at Bieber’s big news, their voices were drowned out by widespread devastation. In between the mournful lamenting of broken hearts came words of shock and utter dismay that the woman sporting the oval-cut diamond and 18 karat yellow gold engagement ring worth a reported $500 000 was neither them, nor Selena Gomez. Bieber and Gomez dated from December 2010 until November 2012. They reconciled weeks later, and their on-again off-again romance continued until 2015. They got back together in 2017, but announced yet another split in March this year. The Canadian singer, songwriter and actor began dating Baldwin in May, and spent a few weeks with her before deciding that she was truly the only woman in the world for him.
The Internet Can’t Deal
In response to engagement reports in the media as well as moody photos and gushing sentiments posted by the lovebirds, the Internet had a meltdown.
In a tweet, one fan asked Amazon’s voice-activated Alexa to play Bieber’s 2010 song That Should Be Me, while another fan also referenced a track title in a tweet that reckoned Baldwin was the actual subject of One Less Lonely Girl. Another internet goer, who tweeted that the singer had really made one of the model, made a similar reference.
A broken-hearted fan posted that her heart had broken twice; once for Gomez, and once for herself.
Another Belieber said they became confusion personified at the news of the engagement, as their hand was lacking a ring. In addition, their father’s permission had not been sought, and they had no recollection of accepting a proposal.
Spotlight On Bieber
Born in Canada in 1994, the singer was discovered at age 14, when a talent manager spotted his YouTube videos of song covers he had recorded. My World, his debut EP, was released in 2009, and was certified platinum in the United States. This was followed up by My World 2.0, his first full-length album, in 2010.
Bieber has gone on to release three more studio albums, appear in movies and TV series, launch four fragrances, and win American Music and Grammy awards. He is also known for his philanthropy, and supports causes such as Pencils of Promise, PETA, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and the Alzheimer’s Association.
While his upcoming nuptials may have broken the hearts of many fans, he’s still a star, and if he does make it to the altar you can bet that there will be a lot more ladies lamenting that their Baby, Baby, Baby is now a man.
