Fans of 90s pop music – and those who enjoy a bit of nostalgia – were left tingling with excitement when the Spice Girls announced their first tour in a decade. Victoria Beckham will not join the 13-date UK and Ireland tour set for May and June next year, due to prior commitments.

The surprise announcement took the form of a news broadcast, it and was made in a video released by Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, and Geri Halliwell. The last time the group appeared as a five-piece was at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

UK Stadium Tour

The Spice Girls, whose mid-90s single Wannabe catapulted them into the international spotlight, will begin their reunion tour on 24 May 2019 at Croke Park, Dublin, Ireland. The group will be supported by singer-songwriter Jess Glynne.

The rest of the dates include:

  • 27 May at Principality Stadium, Cardiff, Wales
  • 29/31 May at Etihad Stadium, Manchester, England
  • 1 June at Etihad Stadium
  • 3/4 June at Ricoh Stadium, Coventry, England
  • 6 June at Stadium of Light, Sunderland, England
  • 8 June at Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, Scotland
  • 10 June at Ashton Gate Stadium, Bristol, England
  • 13 June at Wembley Stadium, London, England

According to reports, if every show is sold out, the foursome should make at least $14.5 million each. Even Posh will earn a few million from the tour, as all five have an equal stake in the brand.

Who’s the Richest of Them All?

The five Spice Girls have made an estimated $648 million through album sales, touring, and their individual careers. However, that amount is definitely not spilt equally, so who is the richest of them all?

Brown, AKA Mel B or Scary Spice, made a fantastic $68 million. Had she not squandered it, she would have been one of the richest – according to ex-husband Stephen Belafonte, who filed documents to this effect in 2017. Her $1.8 million America’s Got Talent contract means she now makes less than $350,000 per month. Prior X Factor and Lip Synch Battle contracts earned her $314,000 and $839,000 respectively.

Bunton, AKA Baby Spice, has an estimated fortune of $38 million. Her Spice Girls income has been supplemented by her solo singing career, as well as by work on television and radio.

Of all former members, Chisholm, AKA Sporty Spice, has enjoyed the most successful career as a solo artist, and is worth an estimated $49 million. In addition to the money she has earned since her 1999 album Northern Star, she has made additional income from concerts and other performances, as well as film and theatre work.

Halliwell, AKA Ginger Spice, is said to have a $57 million fortune. Her Spice Girls millions have been supplemented by royalties, her role as a judge on Australia’s Got Talent, and her Ugenia Lavender children’s novels.

As impressive as all those figures are, none of them compare to the fortune of Mrs Beckham, AKA Posh Spice. She is estimated to be worth an incredible $435 million, having made most of her money from her multi-million-dollar fashion label.

Now a fabulous foursome

A Spicy History

Their smash-hit debut single was released in 1996, but the history of the Spice Girls began two years prior. In 1994, Heart Management decided to create an all-girl group in response to the then male-dominated Britpop scene, and advertised auditions in The Stage magazine.

The group signed with Virgin Records, and in 1996, saw Wannabe top the charts in 37 countries. Their debut album, Spice, went on to sell more than 31 million copies around the world. It was followed by 20-million-copy sales figures for their second album, Spiceworld in 1998, which also saw the release of the movie of the same name. Despite massive early success, Hallliwell left the band in 1998. It continued as a four-piece, and went on to release a third album, Forever, in 2000, before announcing a hiatus that would continue until the release of 2007’s Headlines (Friendship Never Ends), a greatest hits album. In total, the pop act has sold 85 million records globally; a feat that has made the Spice Girls the best-selling female group in history.
